In Gujarat, a recent review meeting chaired by the Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Rishikesh Patel, revealed a significant increase in undergraduate admissions for the academic year 2025-26. The meeting, held in Gandhinagar, focused on the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) and its performance compared to last year. As of July 3, 2025, a total of 322,636 students have been verified on the GCAS portal, reflecting a strong demand for undergraduate courses.
The GCAS has completed eight rounds of admissions, with over 297,000 students receiving admission offers from various universities. This marks a 32% increase in admissions compared to the same period last year, when 170,109 admissions were confirmed.
To manage the increasing number of applicants, the state government has decided to introduce a special admission phase. This phase will allow students who have not yet registered to complete their registration by July 3, with the admission process for these students taking place from July 7 to 11. This initiative aims to ensure that as many students as possible benefit from the admission process.
Minister Patel emphasized the importance of maximizing student participation in this special round. He also reassured that the data from registered students is shared with universities, which will conduct their own merit-based admission processes. This decentralized approach allows universities to offer multiple admission options to students, increasing their chances of securing a place in their desired courses.
While the GCAS aims to streamline the admission process, it has faced challenges, especially for students from rural backgrounds who may struggle with digital platforms. Education activists have called for offline admission opportunities to better support these students.
The review meeting also highlighted that this year, around 225,000 students are expected to confirm their admissions. The increase in admissions is a positive sign for the state’s educational landscape, indicating a growing interest in higher education.
Despite the positive trends, some concerns remain regarding the accessibility of the admissions process. Many students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, face difficulties navigating the online system. As a result, there have been calls for more support and guidance to ensure all students can participate in the admission process effectively.
Overall, the GCAS has shown promising results this year, with a notable increase in undergraduate admissions. The state government remains committed to improving the admission process and ensuring that all students have the opportunity to pursue higher education in Gujarat.
