This summer vacation, the Gujarat State Transport Corporation (GSRTC) is running 2,780 extra buses to help citizens enjoy their time off. These buses aim to connect major cities within the state and make travel easier for everyone. The initiative is part of the government’s ongoing effort to improve public transport under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
From May 1 to May 31, 2025, over 8 lakh passengers benefited from this service. The GSRTC has introduced more than 1,400 extra express buses every day during the summer holiday period. This includes around 500 trips from Surat to Saurashtra, 210 trips from Saurashtra to North Gujarat, and 300 trips from South Gujarat to North Gujarat.
In addition to local routes, passengers can also travel to neighbouring states like Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Special trips are available for religious sites, with daily services from Ahmedabad to places like Ambaji, Somnath, and Dwarka. There are also trips to tourist attractions such as the Statue of Unity and Saputara.
The GSRTC has reported a significant increase in passenger numbers compared to last year. In 2024, 1,988 extra buses were operated during the same period, serving about 5.84 lakh passengers. This year, the number of passengers rose by 2.38 lakh, highlighting the success of the extra bus services.
The total revenue generated by the GSRTC during this period is ₹3.78 crore. The extra buses have covered a distance of 15.61 lakh kilometres, providing essential connectivity for holidaymakers. The increase in services has not only improved travel experiences but has also boosted the economy of the state, showing the government’s commitment to enhancing public transport.
The extra buses are a response to the increased demand during the summer vacation. The GSRTC has made sure that passengers can travel safely and on time. Along with the daily services, the transport department has worked hard to ensure that all aspects of travel are managed effectively.
In Rajkot, for example, the local ST department has seen a dramatic increase in travel, providing services to over 33.97 lakh passengers this year alone. This is an increase of 30,000 passengers compared to the previous year. The daily income for the Rajkot ST department has also risen, reaching between ₹80 to ₹82 lakh due to the high volume of travellers.
In conclusion, the Gujarat ST Corporation’s initiative to run extra buses during the summer vacation is proving beneficial for both passengers and the local economy. With improved connectivity and increased services, the state government continues to demonstrate its commitment to public transport and the welfare of its citizens. This successful operation not only encourages travel within the state but also promotes tourism, making it easier for people to visit various attractions and religious sites across Gujarat and beyond.
