In Gujarat, the fight against tobacco is gaining momentum. Over the past two years, authorities have recorded 64,575 complaints for violations of the Tobacco Control Act. This has resulted in fines amounting to ₹99.86 lakh. The health department is focused on raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco use among youth.
Tobacco consumption has serious health consequences. It is linked to various diseases, including cancer. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, 30% of cancer cases in India are due to tobacco use. The state government is taking steps to tackle this issue.
Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Health Minister Rishikeshbhai Patel, the government has launched campaigns in 14,179 schools. More than 15 lakh children have been made aware of the harmful effects of tobacco. The aim is to prevent them from adopting any form of addiction, including tobacco.
The Tobacco Control Act, 2003, bans advertising, trade, and commerce of tobacco products. This law aims to protect future generations from health, social, and economic crises caused by tobacco use. The government is also running the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) to combat this epidemic.
In 2011, the Gujarat Tobacco Control Cell received an award from the World Health Organization (WHO) for its effective tobacco control measures. The WHO has set a theme for 2025: “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products.” This theme aims to reveal how the tobacco industry makes its harmful products appealing, especially to youth.
On May 31, the world celebrates “World No Tobacco Day.” Initiated by WHO in 1987, this day raises awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco use, including cancer, heart disease, and respiratory issues.
The efforts in Gujarat reflect a broader commitment to public health. The government is determined to reduce tobacco use and protect the health of its citizens. By educating young people and enforcing strict regulations, Gujarat is taking significant steps towards a healthier future.
