Gujarat is set to become a key player in India’s cruise tourism scene. It is the first state in India to align with the Cruise Bharat Mission, a national initiative aiming to increase cruise traffic tenfold by 2029. With a 2,340-km coastline, Gujarat is ready to establish itself on the global cruise map.
The state’s ambitious plan includes developing three major coastal clusters:
1. Padala Island – Rann of Kutch
2. Porbandar – Veraval – Diu
3. Dwarka – Okha – Jamnagar
These routes are designed to offer easy access to cultural, natural, and religious sites. Tourists will enjoy rich experiences while exploring Gujarat’s coastline.
A key part of this initiative is building world-class cruise terminals. The Gujarat Maritime Board is leading the way. They held a workshop on May 6, 2024, to gather input from stakeholders. Officials shared plans for the development of passenger-friendly shore excursions.
Ashwani Kumar, the Principal Secretary of Ports and Transport, noted that this integrated approach could serve as a model for other coastal areas. He emphasized the importance of blending infrastructure development with tourism promotion.
The Cruise Bharat Mission was launched by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in September 2024. It aims to position India as a global cruise tourism hub within the next decade. Gujarat is making rapid progress to become the country’s leading cruise destination.
In addition to the new cruise routes, the Gujarat government is also drafting a Cruise Shipping Policy. This policy will support various departments, including Home, Tourism, and Urban Development. The first draft is expected to be ready soon.
The proposed routes have been carefully planned. Each cluster connects key destinations within a 100-kilometre radius. This ensures that shore excursions are both efficient and attractive for cruise passengers.
Gujarat’s long coastline has not yet seen the establishment of a dedicated cruise terminal, which is crucial for the cruise tourism sector. Major ports like Mumbai and Cochin have already developed significant cruise infrastructures. However, with the Cruise Bharat Mission’s support, Gujarat aims to fill this gap quickly.
The new cruise circuits will include popular destinations like Diu, Veraval, Porbandar, Dwarka, Jamnagar, and Padala Island. The existing Ghogha-Hazira Ro-Pax service will also enhance connectivity.
This initiative is expected to boost local tourism and create jobs. It will also promote the state’s unique cultural heritage and natural beauty. With the government’s proactive approach, Gujarat is poised to lead India’s cruise tourism revolution.
As the state prepares for this exciting journey, it sets a precedent for other coastal states. Gujarat’s commitment to cruise tourism will not only enhance its own economy but also contribute significantly to India’s overall tourism growth. The future of cruise tourism in Gujarat looks bright, and it promises to attract both domestic and international visitors eager to explore its stunning coastline.
