Gujarat University has taken a compassionate step to support the families of MBBS students affected by the tragic Air India flight AI171 crash. This incident took place on June 12 when the flight crashed into the undergraduate mess of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad shortly after take-off. The crash resulted in the deaths of four students and left fourteen others injured.
Vice Chancellor Neerja Gupta announced that the university has begun refunding course fees to the affected families. This initiative was suggested by Education Minister Rushikesh Patel during a condolence meeting held at BJ Medical College. “We have initiated the process of refunding course fees to the affected students and their families,” Gupta said.
The crash occurred during lunchtime, leading to a collapse of the mess ceiling, which caused the tragic loss of four lives. The deceased were identified as Aryan Rajput, Manav Bhadu, Jayprakash Chaudhary, and Rakesh Diyora. The injured students are receiving treatment for serious burns and injuries.
Gujarat University confirmed that the decision to issue refunds was made at the university level, even though the fees are managed by the college. BJ Medical College charges ₹25,000 annually for tuition, ₹1,200 for hostel accommodation, and ₹55 per meal for hostel residents, with total tuition for the four-year MBBS program amounting to ₹1,00,000.
In addition to the fee refunds, the university has also announced a complete waiver of academic fees for 12 students who were injured in the crash. This decision was made following a formal request from the Junior Doctors’ Association of BJ Medical College, which highlighted the significant impact of the tragedy on the students’ physical and mental well-being.
The university’s response reflects its commitment to support students during such difficult times. Dr. Nirja Gupta emphasized the importance of standing by the students and families affected by this tragic incident. “This is our way of supporting them during this difficult time,” she stated.
Furthermore, the state government has assured that the annual tuition fees collected from the deceased students will also be reimbursed to their families.
As the nation mourns the loss of life from the crash, Air India has also stepped in to assist passengers affected by the incident. The airline has announced a one-time waiver on rescheduling and cancellation charges for flights booked on or before June 12, enabling passengers to change their travel plans without incurring extra fees.
In the aftermath of the crash, nine flights between Delhi and Gujarat were cancelled, highlighting the disruption caused by the tragic event. The aircraft involved, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was carrying 242 individuals when it lost control shortly after take-off.
The university’s actions demonstrate a strong sense of community and support in the face of tragedy. Amidst the sadness, efforts are being made to provide relief and assistance to those who are suffering.
