Gujarat has a rich culture and tradition, known for its exquisite handicrafts. Recently, the state has received recognition for 28 unique products, including Kutchi embroidery and Patan Patola, with the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This mark helps promote local artisans and their crafts globally. Over the last three years, approximately 24,000 artisans have sold goods worth over ₹124 crores. In 2023, 11 artisans were honoured with awards for their exceptional work in the handicrafts sector.
The Gujarat government has been supporting the handicrafts industry since 1992. Under the Industrial Extension Cottage (Indext-C), the government aims to create more job opportunities for urban and rural youth. In the last three years, a total of 234 fairs and exhibitions were organised, which helped artisans sell their products across India.
Indext-C has set up permanent markets in Vadodara, Siddhpur, and Rajkot, while also starting the PM Ekta Mall in Surat. These initiatives provide artisans with a platform to showcase their skills and products. The Ahmedabad Haat, Bhuj Haat, and Bopal Haat are among the key locations for these exhibitions.
The government has initiated various projects to ensure economic growth for artisans involved in handicrafts and khadi (hand-spun cloth). The aim is to give everyone a chance to utilise their skills and improve their livelihoods. To support this, the artisans receive marketing platforms to sell their products directly to customers. This helps preserve traditional crafts and improves the social status of artisans.
Indext-C also provides artisan cards to identify craftsmen and assists them in selling their products. Various fairs and exhibitions are organised to promote their creations. Training is provided for skill development, along with tool kits for artisans. This support system is crucial for the survival and growth of Gujarat’s rich handicraft tradition.
The GI tag is a significant achievement for Gujarat’s handicrafts. It indicates that these products, like Kutchi embroidery and Patan Patola, come from a specific geographical area and possess qualities unique to that region. This recognition boosts the local industries and gives artisans a chance to showcase their skills on a global stage.
In 2023, the Craftwise Awards recognised 11 artisans for their outstanding contributions to the handicraft sector. The government continues to promote these crafts through fairs and exhibitions in various states, including Karnataka, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The aim is to make Gujarat’s handicrafts known all over India.
In addition to exhibitions, the government is setting up permanent markets in Vadodara, Siddhpur, and Rajkot. This effort will further promote local handicrafts and provide artisans with a stable platform to sell their products. The state government is committed to enhancing the livelihoods of artisans and ensuring the growth of the handicrafts sector.
