Gujarat is set to enhance its road infrastructure with a significant investment of over ₹93,000 crore. This project aims to connect major industrial and tourist destinations across the state, improving the lives of its citizens. The initiative follows a vision laid out by the former Chief Minister and current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who focused on modernising the state’s roads to increase connectivity. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state government has announced plans to construct world-class highways to meet current demands.
Two major expressways are planned: the Namo Shakti Expressway and the Somnath-Dwarka Expressway. The Namo Shakti Expressway will stretch 430 km from Disa to Pipavav at an estimated cost of ₹36,120 crore. Meanwhile, the Somnath-Dwarka Expressway will cover a distance of 680 km, costing around ₹57,120 crore. These expressways will enhance connectivity for Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and surrounding areas, facilitating quicker travel and trade.
The new expressways will also provide strategic port connectivity for industries in Saurashtra, linking Gujarat with other regions of India. Improved connectivity will help reduce traffic congestion and pollution, making transportation more efficient. The Ahmedabad-Rajkot Expressway will serve as a vital industrial corridor, benefiting the logistics and supply chain sectors by connecting key cities.
These expressways will pass through 13 districts, benefiting approximately 45% of the state’s population. They will include 42 interchanges and various roadside amenities to enhance user experience, such as parking, rest areas, and medical facilities. The project aims to ensure wildlife safety by incorporating overpasses or underpasses where necessary.
The expressways will connect major tourist attractions, including Ambaji, Dwarka, and Somnath, making it easier for visitors to access these important sites. The completion of these projects will create a robust road network, providing over 8,000 km of 4-6 lane highways for the state’s residents. This modern infrastructure will play a crucial role in Gujarat’s economic growth and development, enhancing the overall quality of life for its citizens.
