Gujarat’s Rising Star in National Chess Tournament

In a remarkable achievement, a young girl from Balisana village in Patan, Gujarat, has represented the state in the national chess tournament for the fourth consecutive time. The All India Civil Services Chess Tournament is held every year across various states by the central government. To choose players, the Gujarat government conducts a competition through the General Administration Department. The top six employees are selected to participate at the national level.

This talented girl has consistently ranked first at the state level for three years, earning her spot in the national event. Recently, from May 21 to May 30, 2025, the tournament took place at the Bhausaheb Bandodkar Sports Complex in Pedem, Mapusa, Goa. Here, the women’s team from Gujarat made history by reaching the finals, showcasing their best performance yet. A total of 20 states participated in this prestigious competition.

During the tournament, the Gujarat women’s chess team scored impressively. They achieved four points against the Patan team, three points against Chhattisgarh, three points against Shillong, and two and a half points against Maharashtra. This performance marked the first time the state team has advanced to the final round.

Among the standout players was Mridula Patil, who excelled by winning five out of six rounds. Kajalben Akhani also made her mark by winning a board prize on the sixth table. Other notable players included Naisargiben Sheth from the Technical Education Department, teacher Gouriben Valmik from the Primary Education Department, Jugniben Pitrorda, and health department employee Viralben Rathod. Their achievements received warm congratulations from colleagues and family members, further motivating these players.

The success of the Gujarat women’s chess team highlights the growing talent in the state. It also reflects the increasing support for sports among women, encouraging more girls to pursue their passions in competitive environments.
