On May 20, we celebrate World Bee Day. In Gujarat, beekeeping has become a path to prosperity for many farmers. Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel announced that the number of beekeepers in Gujarat has significantly increased over the last decade. This rise is due to the growing recognition of the importance of bees in agriculture and the support from government programs.
Bees play a vital role in pollination, which helps increase crop yields. Farmers who engage in beekeeping not only benefit from honey production but also see improved harvests from their crops. This dual benefit has made beekeeping an attractive supplementary business for many.
The Indian government has made substantial investments to encourage beekeeping. In Gujarat, over 87.6 million rupees have been provided to support farmers. This funding has helped 1,245 beneficiaries set up bee colonies, purchased hives for 1,234 farmers, and assisted 317 farmers with honey extractors.
Moreover, the state government has initiated a program to provide free beehives to tribal farmers. This plan aims to boost employment and income opportunities for tribal communities. Approximately 5,300 beneficiaries in 53 tribal areas will receive two beehive boxes each, allowing them to start beekeeping with ease.
Beekeeping training has also been a focus. So far, over 11,300 farmers have received advanced training in beekeeping. This initiative helps farmers learn how to manage hives efficiently and market their products. The program, known as Mission Beekeeping, was launched to enhance honey production and processing.
On the occasion of World Bee Day, the agriculture department will hold discussions in districts like Aravalli, Rajkot, Surendranagar, and Valsad to promote beekeeping further. The aim is to raise awareness about the ecological importance of bees and the potential benefits of beekeeping.
The government’s continued support and the farmers’ growing interest signal a sweet future for Gujarat’s beekeeping industry. With the introduction of various schemes, the hope is to transform beekeeping into a robust source of income for many farmers while also contributing to environmental sustainability. As the demand for honey and bee products grows, Gujarat is poised to become a key player in the beekeeping sector, ensuring a prosperous future for its farmers.
