On June 5, 2025, Haryana’s Chief Minister, Sh. Nayab Singh Saini, attended a significant conference focused on natural farming held at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University in Hisar. This event coincided with World Environment Day and aimed to promote sustainable agricultural practices among farmers. The event featured notable discussions led by Sh. Acharya Devvrat, the Governor of Gujarat and a strong advocate for natural farming. He emphasized that adopting natural farming is essential for the nation’s agricultural strength and a response to the pressing need of our times.
Governor Devvrat pointed out the dangers posed by chemical farming. He explained that the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has harmed farm productivity and human health. This has led to increased cases of serious diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart attacks. He shared his personal experience of farming 180 acres using natural methods, which resulted in higher yields compared to chemical farming.
The Governor highlighted the differences between organic and natural farming, noting that organic farming can be very expensive and may contribute to air pollution. In contrast, natural farming is much less costly and does not harm the environment. He encouraged farmers to embrace natural farming as a way to not only improve their health but also enhance soil productivity and conserve water.
Natural farming, according to the Governor, is not just about obtaining healthy crops. It can also lead to higher incomes for farmers while ensuring that consumers have access to nutritious food. He assured attendees that adopting natural farming practices would not reduce yields.
Referencing the Prime Minister’s National Natural Farming Mission, Governor Devvrat stated that the aim is to connect one crore farmers with natural farming practices by 2025-26. A budget of ₹2481 crore has been allocated for this initiative. He urged farmers to join this program and receive training in natural farming techniques.
Devvrat stressed that natural farming is not merely an option but a necessity for the future. He called for a collective strategy to move away from harmful chemical farming practices and build a healthy and prosperous India for future generations. He appealed to farmers to abandon chemical farming and protect both public health and the environment.
In response, Chief Minister Saini expressed gratitude to Governor Devvrat for his insightful guidance on natural farming. He described natural farming as a comprehensive life philosophy and highlighted that it does not exploit nature while preserving human values and environmental integrity. Saini assured that the state government would accelerate efforts to promote natural farming across Haryana, in line with Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.
The Haryana government aims to implement natural farming on one lakh acres of land by 2025-26. Saini shared that regular training sessions on natural farming are organized in the state. Farmers adopting natural practices receive assistance of ₹20,000 for branding and packaging their products, and ₹30,000 for purchasing native cows.
Furthermore, the state has disbursed ₹563 crore to about 20 lakh farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. Additionally, over the past decade, ₹15,145 crore has been credited to farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
To combat fraudulent practices, legislation has been proposed to regulate the sale of counterfeit fertilizers and seeds. The state is also working to clear ₹133 crore in debts owed to farmers from the colonial era. New regulations are set to provide land ownership rights to tenant farmers who have been cultivating land for many years without ownership.
Chief Minister Saini announced plans to establish a natural and organic market in Gurugram, which will include a special laboratory for free testing of vegetables and other crops. A dedicated committee will also be formed to ensure farmers receive fair prices for their natural products.
The conference witnessed attendance from various dignitaries, including Haryana’s Agriculture Minister Sh. Shyamsingh Rana and numerous officials and farmers, all eager to learn and adapt to natural farming methods. This event marked a significant step in Haryana’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.
