On World No Tobacco Day, HCG Aastha Cancer Centre and HCG Hospitals in Ahmedabad launched the ‘Wheels of Change: Ride Against Tobacco’ initiative. This event aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use. It featured a bike rally and a zombie-themed dance performance, blending physical activity with creative expression. Doctors flagged off the bike rally, which started at the HCG Aastha Cancer Centre and concluded at T-Pots Desi Cafe. Participants included bike riders, families, healthcare professionals, and local residents.
After the rally, a brief awareness session was held. HCG doctors and fitness experts discussed the harmful effects of tobacco and the importance of lifestyle changes. Participants were encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle by planting saplings and receiving eco-friendly gifts like reusable straws.
The event also featured a creative display in a popular residential complex, where dancers dressed as zombies aimed to highlight the long-term harm caused by tobacco. This performance received an enthusiastic response from the audience, especially the youth. Dr. Pooja Dave Patel, head and neck surgical oncologist at HCG Aastha Cancer Centre, stated, “Tobacco is a major preventable cause of cancers, especially oral and lung cancers. This initiative served as an opportunity to start conversations about the risks of tobacco use, particularly among young people. Increasing awareness to prevent and reduce tobacco use is crucial, and HCG is committed to actively supporting and participating in such initiatives.”
The cardiac science department at HCG Hospitals in Ahmedabad emphasized, “Such programs facilitate proactive interventions, educating people about the risks of weakened immunity due to tobacco use, which can lead to heart disease, stroke, and other serious health issues. Fortunately, quitting smoking at any stage brings immediate and long-term health benefits, making awareness and early prevention vital in the fight against preventable cancers.”
Through this initiative, HCG reaffirmed its commitment to preventive care and community outreach, linking health messages with creative forms of expression like biking and performance arts. The ‘Wheels of Change’ campaign inspired many to reflect on their choices and move towards a healthy, tobacco-free lifestyle, showcasing the positive potential of youth adopting healthier habits.
This event was a part of HCG’s broader commitment to cancer care and public health education. By actively involving the community, they aim to encourage a healthier lifestyle and reduce tobacco use, which remains a significant public health challenge. The creativity of the performances and the participation of local residents highlighted the importance of community efforts in health promotion. HCG Aastha Cancer Centre continues to lead initiatives that not only treat cancer but also work towards preventing it through education and awareness programs.
