The Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST) has launched an important Health Awareness Talk Series. This initiative aims to promote healthy habits among students, teachers, and the general public. The first talk, titled “Importance of Hygiene and Sanitation,” took place on July 1, 2025, to mark National Doctor’s Day.
Over 5,000 participants joined virtually for this event. The session featured esteemed medical experts, Dr Manoj Gumber, a senior consultant and nephrologist, and Dr Vishnu Joshi, the Deputy Health Officer of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation. They discussed health and well-being, focusing on hygiene and sanitation.
During the session, Dr Joshi highlighted the importance of cleanliness. He demonstrated proper handwashing techniques and explained that washing hands can reduce respiratory diseases by 21%. He also mentioned that maintaining hand hygiene can lower the risk of diarrheal diseases by up to 40%.
Dr Gumber spoke about various non-communicable diseases and preventive measures. He discussed the causes of diabetes and hypertension, suggesting lifestyle changes for participants to manage their health better.
At the end of the session, many participants asked questions. Both doctors addressed these inquiries meaningfully, discussing key topics related to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and preventive healthcare measures.
The interactive talks were part of a network of Regional Science Centres (RSC) and Community Science Centres (CSC) across Gujarat. Participants included students, teachers, science communicators, and citizens who engaged with renowned medical experts.
GUJCOST is committed to organising these health awareness sessions regularly every month. The next talk is scheduled for August 7, 2025, and will focus on “Control of Infectious and Vector-borne Diseases.”
This initiative reflects GUJCOST’s commitment to promoting scientific literacy and public health awareness. By providing knowledge and practical guidance, GUJCOST aims to help build a healthier society.
