Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is facing heavy rainfall that has led to significant flooding in many areas. The monsoon has made a strong start, impacting daily life in regions like Amreli and Bhavnagar. After a long wait, the skies darkened on Monday afternoon, bringing strong winds and rain by evening. The rainfall, accompanied by thunder, created widespread waterlogging, causing trouble for drivers and commuters.
Many residents have rushed home to avoid the rising water levels. After enduring high temperatures and humidity, people were eagerly awaiting the rains. The downpour has brought relief from the heat, especially in areas like Prahlad Nagar, Meghani Nagar, Shahibaug, and Asarwa, where the rain was particularly heavy.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Gujarat over the next four days. They have predicted possible flooding in some districts, including Saurashtra and Kutch. Reports indicate that over 101 talukas in the state have received rainfall, with Bhavnagar receiving the most.
In Bhavnagar, the roads have turned into rivers due to the intense rain, and low-lying areas are now underwater. The IMD has cautioned that flooding conditions may develop in the next 24 hours across several districts, including Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Gir, Somnath, Junagadh, Amreli, Dwarka, Morbi, Surendranagar, Botad, and Bhavnagar.
As the monsoon progresses, the weather system is becoming stronger, leading to increased rainfall in South and Central Gujarat. Cyclonic circulation is currently active in South Gujarat, suggesting that rainfall intensity will rise further. On Monday evening, the city saw a sudden change in weather, with rainfall measured at 26.75 mm in just one hour across various regions.
From 6 AM to 8 PM, Ahmedabad recorded an average of 7.43 mm of rain, bringing the season’s total to 6 inches. This heavy rain resulted in waterlogging in multiple areas, leading to the closure of the Mithakhali underpass due to a foot and a half of accumulated water. Many underpasses and roads have been closed to traffic, affecting many people’s daily commutes.
As heavy rains continue, the authorities are on alert, monitoring river levels and potential flooding situations. Residents are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and take necessary precautions. The heavy rainfall is a welcome relief for farmers who have been waiting for the monsoon to nourish their crops, although the risk of flooding raises concerns for their produce.
