Palanpur has been hit hard by heavy rains, disrupting daily life in the city. The intense rainfall has caused flooding in low-lying areas, with parts of the city submerged under water. The local government has declared a holiday for primary schools due to the severe weather. Traffic has been rerouted, and many roads have been closed, causing significant inconvenience to residents.
In just four hours, Palanpur received eight inches of rain, which resulted in widespread flooding. The main road in the Brijeshwar Colony area was blocked, and many vehicles were damaged due to the knee-deep water. People faced extreme difficulties as they tried to navigate the flooded streets.
The Betchpur area was particularly affected, with water spilling onto the main highway. Many homes in the surrounding areas were inundated. The drainage systems struggled to cope with the volume of rain, leaving residents stuck in their houses.
In the Aman Park Society on Sukhbaug Road, knee-deep water made it hard for residents to leave their homes. Areas like Ambavadi, Ganeshpura, and the Civil Hospital were also severely flooded, causing widespread distress.
Traffic jams developed on the Palanpur-Ahmedabad Highway, which was closed due to waterlogged roads. For two hours, vehicles were stuck, prompting authorities to divert traffic to alternate routes. The DySP confirmed that traffic was redirected from Abu to Disa and Ahmedabad due to the conditions.
Heavy rains also caused the breakage of a causeway on the Ladhbhi River, closing the road between Vedancha and Bhavisna. This left farmers, drivers, and pedestrians in a difficult situation.
The roads leading to the residences of the District Collector and local MP were also flooded, causing major disruptions. Schools were ordered to close due to the waterlogged conditions, affecting several areas including Adarsh Vidya Sankul and Mewada.
In response to the crisis, local officials, including the MLA and municipal leaders, visited affected areas to assess the situation and coordinate emergency responses. They promised to address the needs of those impacted by the flooding.
The rainfall is part of the monsoon season, which has seen Gujarat experience heavy showers across the state. The Banaskantha district, where Palanpur is located, has faced significant rainfall, prompting a red alert from the weather department. As a result, schools in Palanpur, Dantivada, Vadgam, Dhanera, and Disa were ordered to remain closed on July 3.
Residents are urged to stay safe and avoid flooded areas. The local government is working to clear the water and restore normalcy as quickly as possible. The community is coming together to support those affected by the floods, highlighting the resilience of Palanpur’s residents in the face of adversity.
