Heavy Rain Causes Flooding in Pune, Maharashtra

Pune, Maharashtra, is facing heavy rain that has disrupted daily life. The rain started early in the morning and has continued throughout the day. Major areas affected include the Konkan region, Pune, Satara, Thane, and Mumbai. Reports show that heavy traffic jams have formed on the highways due to the downpour.

Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, has urged the authorities to stay alert and respond quickly to rescue operations. He also asked residents to heed weather warnings from the meteorological department. People living in low-lying areas have been advised to take precautions.

Bhigvan, a town near the Pune-Solapur Highway, is experiencing severe conditions. Over the last 24 hours, Pune has recorded an alarming amount of rainfall. The Western Ghats have received 184.5 mm of rain in Kurwande, causing significant waterlogging in various regions. Low-lying areas are at risk of flooding, prompting warnings from the weather department about heavy rain expected on the 26th and 27th of May.

Local authorities have issued alerts for residents to stay indoors. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has already rescued six people from the banks of the Pumalsir and Kurubavi rivers, including three men, two women, and a child. Additionally, eight people have been rescued from Baramati district due to flooding.

The heavy rain has caused waterlogging on the Western Express Highway, leading to significant traffic disruptions. Reports indicate a traffic jam stretching 15 kilometers from Kandivali to Santa Cruz due to the weather conditions. In Mumbai, strong winds and rain have caused several trees to fall, blocking roads in some areas.

This year’s monsoon has arrived unusually early, marking the first time in 35 years that Maharashtra has seen such early rainfall. The weather department has issued an orange alert for Thane, Pune, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, and Raigad, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

As the rain continues, authorities are urging the public to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in affected areas. The situation is being monitored closely, and emergency services are on standby to respond to any further incidents. Residents are encouraged to follow updates from local news and weather services to stay informed about changing conditions.
