In Ahmedabad, the rainy season has started with a bang. Heavy rains have caused flooding in several areas, including Nikol, where the Madhumalti Housing Scheme is located. The continuous downpour on Wednesday has left residents struggling. Water has entered homes, and many have had to move their belongings to higher ground. Tragically, one person lost their life due to delayed medical assistance.
The Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Mirant Parikh, reported that the city received an average of three inches of rain on Wednesday night. This caused water to accumulate in 105 locations across Ahmedabad. Most of the water was drained by 1 PM on Thursday, but 15 locations continued to struggle with flooding well into the evening.
In the Madhumalti Housing Scheme, residents are facing dire conditions. Water has filled up to two feet inside ground floor homes. One resident, Jitubhai Pandya, experienced a tragic incident. His family moved their belongings to the first floor, but when they returned to check downstairs, he slipped and fell into the water. Despite the family’s urgent call for an ambulance, the 108 emergency service could not reach them due to the flooding. Local residents had to find a cart to transport Jitubhai to the road for help, but he was declared dead upon arrival.
The flooding situation has left many in the area in distress. The heavy rains have also caused water logging in various underpasses and roads across the city. Reports indicate that several roads have sunk and some areas have become unreachable.
Despite the efforts of the Municipal Corporation to manage the drainage system, the heavy rainfall has overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure. The Eastern Main Trunk Line project is expected to be completed by June 30, which should help alleviate future flooding issues in the eastern part of the city.
Additionally, the weather department issued warnings for continued heavy rain, which has already displaced over one thousand people across the state. The worst-hit areas include Bhavnagar and parts of Saurashtra. The city of Ahmedabad is attempting to manage the heavy rain’s impact, but residents continue to face challenges.
As the situation develops, local authorities are working to ensure that affected residents receive the help they need. The community is coming together to support one another during this difficult time, but it is a stark reminder of the dangers that heavy rainfall can bring.
Overall, the rainy season has begun with severe consequences, and many are urging for better preparations to handle such natural disasters in the future.
