Heavy Rain Forecast for Gujarat Ahead of Monsoon

Gandhinagar/Ahmedabad: The meteorological department has announced that a low-pressure system forming in the Arabian Sea could develop into a depression within 24 hours. This system, located near Goa and the Konkan region, may affect various areas in Gujarat. Currently, the possibility of a cyclone forming is low, according to Skymet’s predictions. An anti-cyclone and ridge are present in the Arabian Sea, making it difficult to determine the exact track of the system.

Due to this cyclonic circulation, the weather department has predicted heavy rain across more than 12 districts in Gujarat over the next seven days. An orange alert has been issued for many districts due to the expected heavy rainfall. In addition, the government has instructed the establishment of a control room to monitor the situation.

On Thursday, many areas in Gujarat experienced mini-cyclones, with strong winds and rainfall reported in Rajkot, Amreli, and Surendranagar districts. The strong winds caused damage, uprooting several trees and billboards in Rajkot city and Gondal region. Window panes of buildings were also broken due to the fierce winds.

Currently, scattered rain is being reported across various districts of the state. The upper-air cyclonic circulation has created a rainy atmosphere ahead of the southwest monsoon’s official arrival. The weather department has forecasted light to heavy rainfall with thunder in the coming days. Areas in Saurashtra and South Gujarat can expect winds blowing at speeds of 50-70 km/h, and a yellow alert has been issued for these regions. In response, the Chief Minister has advised district administrations in alert areas to stay vigilant.

According to the weather department’s forecast, heavy rain with thunder is expected in Saurashtra and South Gujarat until May 28. From May 23 to 25, districts including Rajkot, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, Bharuch, Surat, Tapi, Narmada, Navsari, Dang, and Valsad are likely to experience heavy rainfall, prompting a yellow alert.

On May 26, rain is expected in 15 districts, including Rajkot, Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, Anand, Bharuch, Surat, Tapi, Chhota Udaipur, Narmada, Navsari, Dang, and Valsad. Thunder and heavy rain are predicted, along with winds of 50-70 km/h across Gujarat.

In the last 48 hours, Saurashtra has been affected by a sudden change in weather, leading to thunderstorms and heavy downpours. Areas like Rajkot, Gondal, Amreli, and Jamjodhpur have reported rainfall between half an inch to one inch. Complaints have emerged about the preparations for the pre-monsoon season, as many hoardings were blown away, trees fell, and roads were blocked, resulting in waterlogging in several places. In Rajkot, hoardings collapsed at two locations, and over 30 trees and branches fell, causing significant disruptions in transportation due to flooding.

The weather department has urged farmers to take precautions and protect their crops in light of the upcoming rain. With the arrival of the southwest monsoon expected soon, the state is bracing for more weather changes and potential impacts on agriculture. Residents are advised to stay informed and heed alerts from local authorities.
