Heavy Rain Hits Gujarat Causing Flooding and Disruptions

Gujarat has been experiencing heavy rainfall across the state, bringing relief from the unbearable heat in recent days. The monsoon has made a strong entrance, with significant downpours reported in various districts. Many areas are facing flooding as a result.

As the rainfall intensified, seven water reservoirs were placed on high alert. Six of these reservoirs are now completely filled. Key reservoirs such as Dhatarwadi, Surajwadi, and Rozki are on high alert. Residents in low-lying areas have been evacuated to safer locations. Reports confirm that 80 people were relocated in Amreli, and 40 in Botad. In total, 109 individuals have been rescued so far, with five teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed and ten on standby.

Over the last 24 hours, heavy rain has fallen in 221 talukas across the state. The highest rainfall was recorded at 14 inches in Gadhada, followed by 12 inches in Palitana, 11.6 inches in Sihor, and 11 inches in Botad. Other areas such as Umrala, Jesar, Mahuva, and Rajula also reported significant rainfall.

The heavy rains caused three houses to collapse in Sankheda village of Chhota Udaipur district. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, but parked cars suffered substantial damage from the debris. Local authorities and relief teams are working at the disaster site to assist those affected.

In the Botad district, heavy rainfall occurred from 5 PM yesterday until 6 AM today, with Gadhada receiving 14 inches. Botad recorded 7.5 inches, while Ranpur and Barwala saw 2.5 inches each.

Bhavnagar has witnessed extremely heavy rainfall over the past two days. Due to the rain, rivers are experiencing increased water flow. Many areas are reporting waterlogging as well. Based on the severe weather and red alert from the meteorological department, schools will be closed on Wednesday, June 18.

Dr. Manish Bansal, the district collector of Bhavnagar, announced that all schools, from pre-primary to standard 12, will have a holiday on June 18, 2025. This announcement applies to all private, government, and granted schools.

Heavy rainfall has caused significant damage in Bhavnagar district. A causeway connecting Bhutya and Shetrunji dams collapsed near Bhutya village. Reports have emerged about the old pipeline of Shetrunji, which serves as a lifeline for Bhavnagar, also breaking.

In Vallabhipur taluka, the river Ghelo overflowed, leading to water entering surrounding villages. This has disrupted connectivity with villages like Navagam, Loliayana, Haliyad, and Khetatingbi. Alerts have been issued to these areas due to the rising water levels.

In Amreli city and surrounding rural areas, heavy rains have transformed roads and farmland into flooded zones. In a tragic incident, a father and son were swept away in their bullock cart when the Thorali river overflowed. Local residents alerted the fire department, but one person lost their life due to the flooding.

The situation remains critical as more rain is expected. Authorities are on high alert and urging residents to stay safe and follow evacuation orders where necessary.
