Heavy Rainfall Alerts in Saurashtra and South Gujarat

Gujarat’s weather has taken a sudden turn. For the past two days, strong winds have been blowing across the state. Many districts are experiencing rainfall. The Meteorological Department has forecasted rainy weather for the next four to five days, along with a yellow alert for heavy rain.

This morning, several districts in Saurashtra and South Gujarat witnessed heavy rainfall. In Navsari, the newly constructed overbridge got waterlogged due to the downpour. In Surat, the rain provided relief from the heat. The Surat Emergency Response Center (ICCC) has made special arrangements considering the possibility of a cyclone. Live monitoring of the cyclone is currently in place.

According to the Meteorological Department, strong winds and heavy rain are expected over the next five days. A yellow alert has been issued for several regions of the state from May 24 to 27. The Arabian Sea is currently experiencing a low-pressure system, which has caused this change in weather. This system is likely to transform into a depression within 24 hours. Heavy rain with thunder and lightning is forecasted for South Gujarat and Saurashtra.

In Navsari, water accumulated near the overbridge, affecting local life. This overbridge, built at a cost of 110 crores by the Roads and Buildings Department, faced issues as water also logged the railway underpass, disrupting transport. Despite the municipal corporation spending 17 lakh rupees on a wall to prevent water accumulation, the situation remains critical.

Concerns have arisen regarding the mango crop due to the strong winds. In Vyara city and nearby areas, unseasonal rain began after a cyclone warning was issued. The winds at Musa Road and Mission Naka in Vyara raised fears of damage to mango crops. Heavy winds and rain were reported in several areas of Navsari, increasing farmers’ anxiety about potential losses to mango and chickoo crops. The unseasonal rain could also affect summer pulse crops.

In Amreli, water collected in societies due to the rain. Residents faced difficulties as water entered homes in the Vidyanagar society on Lathi Road. Additionally, in Gir Somnath’s Sutrapada taluka, strong winds caused damage to homes and structures.

In Surat district, the weather changed early in the morning. Heavy winds and rain began in Bardoli and surrounding areas. A large tree fell on Shastri Road, blocking the way. Waterlogged areas were reported near Ashapuri Temple and Jagriti Nagar.

In Tapi district, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds fell for two hours. Rainfall was recorded as follows: 4 mm in Nizar, 1 mm in Uchhal, 16 mm in Songadh, 11 mm in Vyara, 6 mm in Valod, 6 mm in Kukarmunda, and 4 mm in Dolvan. Farmers are worried due to the unseasonal rain.

Valsad district also saw rain and lightning early in the morning. Rainfall was recorded in Valsad district, as well as in Maharashtra-Gujarat border areas and the Union Territory of Daman-Silvassa. A cyclone warning had been issued for South Gujarat.

The Meteorological Department has advised caution to residents, especially in low-lying areas that may face waterlogging and possible damage to weak structures. People are urged to stay in safe areas during this weather event. The changing weather patterns in Gujarat call for attention as heavy rain is expected in various districts, including Jamnagar, Morbi, Rajkot, Junagadh, Amreli, and Surendranagar, among others. With the impact on agriculture and local life, the situation is being monitored closely.
