Heavy Rainfall in Ahmedabad Leads to Over 1,600 Potholes

Ahmedabad is facing a serious issue as the monsoon rains have caused extensive damage to the roads. This season, over 1,600 potholes have appeared in various areas, including Paldi, Naranpura, Navrangpura, Chandlodiya, and Ghatlodiya. The heavy rainfall has not only created potholes but has also washed away some of the temporary repairs made by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

The areas most affected include:
– Paldi: 123 potholes
– Naranpura: 195 potholes
– Navrangpura: 344 potholes
– Vasna: 244 potholes
– Ranip: 151 potholes
– Sabarmati: 146 potholes
– Chandkheda: 34 potholes
– Stadium: 78 potholes

In the North-West zones of the city, including Bodakdev, Thaltej, Ghatlodiya, and Chandlodiya, 648 potholes have been reported. The Municipal Commissioner has held meetings to ensure that teams take immediate action to fill these potholes. However, many repairs have not been effective, leading to new potholes appearing in the same spots.

Additionally, the city has experienced 19 road cave-ins in just 19 days due to the heavy rains. Harpalsinh Jhala, the chief engineer of AMC, stated that the drainage lines are also under stress. A drainage line collapsed near Valinath Chowk, creating a significant pothole on the road.

Despite efforts by the AMC to improve drainage infrastructure, many areas still suffer from waterlogging after heavy rains. For example, about 4.2 inches of rain were recorded before the official start of the monsoon season, resulting in flooding in some places. However, the water drained away quickly due to new stormwater networks laid in major waterlogging spots.

Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reviewed the preparations of civic bodies for the upcoming monsoon. He instructed municipal commissioners to focus on road maintenance, water supply, and drainage. The officials also discussed mock drills, control room setups, and emergency provisions to handle possible flooding.

The citizens of Ahmedabad are understandably frustrated with the poor road conditions. Many have reported damage to their vehicles due to potholes. Some residents have taken to social media to voice their concerns, calling for immediate action to repair the roads.

The AMC continues to face criticism for its handling of road repairs. As the monsoon season progresses, residents hope for timely and effective solutions to the pothole crisis. It is crucial for the municipal corporation to address these issues to ensure the safety and convenience of the public.
