Heavy Rainfall in Surat: Yellow and Orange Alerts Issued Across Gujarat

Surat experienced a significant downpour early on June 23, with over 7 inches of rain falling within just four hours. This sudden rainfall caused flooding in various low-lying areas, disrupting daily life for many residents. Traffic was severely affected, with reports of submerged vehicles and blocked roads. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in several districts of Gujarat over the next three days. Today and for the next two days, yellow and orange alerts have been declared across various regions.

On June 23, a yellow alert is in place for districts including Amreli, Bhavnagar, Navsari, Valsad, Botad, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Dahod, Vadodara, Anand, Bharuch, Panchmahal, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Tapi, Surat, Dangs, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, Kheda, Rajkot, Gir Somnath, Junagadh, Chhota Udaipur, and Narmada. These areas are expected to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.

On June 24, the forecast predicts stronger winds and heavy rain, leading to an orange alert for Amreli, Bhavnagar, Navsari, and Valsad. A yellow alert will be in effect for districts such as Rajkot, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Dangs, Vadodara, Chhota Udaipur, Panchmahal, and Dahod.

Continuing into June 25, the warnings for heavy rain remain unchanged. An orange alert is set for Aravalli, Mahisagar, Dahod, Panchmahal, Chhota Udaipur, Navsari, Valsad, Bhavnagar, and Amreli, while a yellow alert covers Porbandar, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Botad, Anand, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Kheda, Sabarkantha, Vadodara, Surat, Tapi, Dangs, Narmada, and Bharuch.

Looking ahead, the IMD has indicated a potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Gujarat from June 26 to June 28. Citizens are urged to stay alert and follow any instructions issued by local authorities.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay clear of low-lying areas. In case of thunderstorms, it is recommended not to seek shelter under open fields or trees.

The recent rains in Gujarat have been part of the annual monsoon, which brings much-needed relief from the heat. However, the intensity of the rainfall has raised concerns about flooding and its impact on infrastructure and daily activities. Several districts have already reported significant rainfall, with the highest recorded in Sabarkantha and Banaskantha.

Gujarat’s monsoon season is crucial for agriculture and water supply, but it also demands careful monitoring of weather conditions. The IMD’s alerts serve as a reminder for citizens to prepare for sudden weather changes and to take precautions against potential hazards associated with heavy rainfall. With the monsoon now underway, residents are advised to remain vigilant and stay updated on weather forecasts.
