Heavy Rains Expected in Gujarat: Orange Alert Issued

Gandhinagar: The weather department has issued warnings for heavy rains in Gujarat. A large low-pressure system is moving towards the state from the Arabian Sea. This system may cause heavy rain until July 6. A monsoon trough is currently active, running from Gujarat to Bengal. The low-pressure system is also affecting Rajasthan, which may lead to more rainfall in Gujarat.

According to sources from the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC), heavy rain has already been reported in 232 talukas across 33 districts in the state. Jabunghoda recorded over 2.5 inches of rain yesterday. Areas such as Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Ahmedabad, and Dahod are on yellow alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall.

On July 3 and 4, an orange alert has been issued for Navsari, Valsad, Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, and Dadra Nagar Haveli due to expected heavy rainfall. As of yesterday evening, Mehsana experienced approximately 4 inches of rain.

The SEOC reported that by 6 PM yesterday, average rainfall was observed in 160 talukas across the state. Historical data shows that in June, there has been an average of around 4 inches of rain over the last 13 years. However, this year, Gujarat has already received nearly 10 inches of rainfall.

Sardar Sarovar Dam is currently 49.09% full. Water inflow is recorded at 33,026 cubic feet per second, while outflow is at 36,036 cubic feet per second. In the state, 13 dams in Amreli, Bhavnagar, Botad, Dahod, Jamnagar, Kutch, Surendranagar, and Tapi are completely full. A high alert warning has been issued for 19 dams, while 13 dams are on alert status. In total, 3,703 people have been relocated across 10 districts, and 676 individuals have been rescued from floodwaters in 9 districts.

The weather department has also issued a nowcast for heavy, medium, and light rainfall across the state. An orange alert is in place for heavy rains in Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Porbandar. Yellow alerts are issued for Junagadh, Amreli, Gir Somnath, and Bhavnagar.

Residents in Kutch and Dwarka are advised to stay alert as heavy rains are expected to continue. The monsoon is now in full swing, and systems formed in the Bay of Bengal are enhancing rainfall in the region. Historical data indicates that 25% of the season’s average rainfall has already been recorded in the first ten days. Continuous rains have caused 11 dams to overflow, while 20 others are nearly full, prompting alerts.

The weather department anticipates heavy rainfall for the next four days. People are urged to take precautions and stay safe during this monsoon season.
