Gujarat is facing heavy rainfall, leading to significant disruptions and safety concerns. On Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Navsari and Valsad, warning of very heavy rainfall expected to last until July 11. This week has seen continuous downpours across many areas, causing a need for action. In Bardoli taluka of Surat district, around 40 people were relocated to safer locations due to the risk of flooding. Since the start of the monsoon on June 1, over 3,700 people have been moved to safety across Gujarat.
The IMD reported that Dolvan in Tapi district recorded the highest rainfall on Sunday with 155 mm, followed closely by Bardoli in Surat with 125 mm. Other districts such as Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari, Bhavnagar, and Amreli also experienced significant rainfall throughout the day. Surat Collector Dr Sourabh Pardhi confirmed the precautions taken in Surat district, stating, “The entire Surat district has been on alert for a day. Nearly 40 people were relocated on Sunday.”
In the last 24 hours, Bhiloda in Aravalli recorded an impressive 167 mm of rain. Various regions, including Vyara and Dolvan in Tapi, received 141 mm and 135 mm, respectively. The rainfall has led to an average of 26.65 mm across 204 talukas in 33 districts.
Ahmedabad city also faced continuous rain, logging an average of 26 mm by Sunday evening. The IMD has warned residents of light thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and surface winds of 30-40 km/h. This weather pattern is expected to continue until July 10. Local authorities are encouraging people to stay updated on the weather and take necessary precautions.
