Starting primary school is a significant moment in a child’s life. It sets the foundation for future learning and growth. In 2003, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, launched the Shala Praveshotsav initiative. This program aimed to celebrate school enrolment as a festive occasion rather than a simple routine. Over the years, this initiative has transformed the way children in Gujarat start their educational journey.
On June 26, 2025, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the 23rd edition of Shala Praveshotsav at Divda PM Shri School in Kadana Taluka, Mahisagar district. This event continues to open doors of education for many children across the state, helping them build successful futures in various professions, including teaching, engineering, and medicine.
One inspiring story is that of Dr. Het Kantibhai Joshi, a resident of Debhari village in Mahisagar district. Het was enrolled in primary school through Shala Praveshotsav in 2007. He recalls the festive spirit that filled his village when Modi visited to enroll children into schools. “The whole village was excited. Modi Sir gave us slates, notebooks, and pens to support our learning,” Het remembers. During that visit, Modi spoke about the importance of education and the bright future awaiting them.
As a child, Het was not very interested in education. He had attended kindergarten but did not enjoy it. However, his experience with Shala Praveshotsav changed everything. “I made new friends and started going to school on my own. Soon, I loved school more than being at home. I developed a real interest in learning, especially in maths and science,” he shares.
Het’s educational journey continued as he completed his early education in a government school from Class 1 to 5. He then attended a school in Lunawada for his secondary education, commuting daily by bus. For higher secondary studies, he joined Parth School of Science and Competition in Vadodara, where he focused on the Science stream.
During this time, the NEET exam for medical admissions was introduced, and Het was part of its third batch. His school had a strict routine with regular tests and guidance from teachers. This support, along with his hard work, boosted his confidence. After passing Class 12, Het scored 555 out of 720 in the NEET exam and gained admission to MP Shah Medical College in Jamnagar, a government college. The lower fees made it easier for him to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor.
Het faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic while preparing for his first and second-year MBBS exams. In 2024, he successfully cleared his final-year MBBS exam and completed his medical internship in 2025. Today, he works as a Medical Officer at the Primary Health Centre in Virpur Taluka.
Dr. Het Joshi’s educational journey, which began with Shala Praveshotsav, has led him to a meaningful role in public healthcare. He is now among Gujarat’s dedicated young doctors with a bright future. Reflecting on his journey, he credits Shala Praveshotsav for introducing him to education, an opportunity that changed his life.
Many similar stories exist, where Shala Praveshotsav has played a crucial role in shaping children’s futures. Numerous children who were enrolled through this initiative have grown into successful professionals, contributing positively to society. This programme has not only transformed individual lives but also made a significant impact on Gujarat’s education landscape.
