Illegal Abortion Racket Exposed at Panama Hotel in Bavla

In a shocking development, the SOG police in Ahmedabad raided the Panama Hotel located in Bavla. They discovered an illegal abortion racket operating within the hotel. During the raid, police apprehended nurse Hemlata Darji, who was performing the abortions, along with a guesthouse operator. This incident has raised serious concerns about unregulated medical practices in the region.

The investigation began when police received a tip that illegal abortions were being conducted in the hotel. Following this lead, the police coordinated with the local health team and executed a search warrant. They found Hemlata Darji in Room 105 of the hotel, along with a woman seeking an abortion and her sister-in-law who was assisting.

According to police reports, Hemlata, who has no medical degree, has been conducting these illegal operations for three years. She charged around 15,000 rupees for each procedure. Notably, 8,000 of that amount was paid to Dr. Harshad Chhaganlal Acharya, a radiologist from Ahmedabad, who was also arrested during the investigation. He allegedly conducted pregnancy tests at his clinic before referring women to the hotel for abortions.

Police revealed that the racket was well-organized. Women who were expecting girls were particularly targeted. Hemlata would conduct ultrasound tests and encourage women to terminate pregnancies if they were carrying female fetuses. It is believed that many women turned to this illegal service due to societal pressures regarding the birth of female children.

The police have stated that this operation was not a one-time occurrence. Similar illegal activities had reportedly taken place at the hotel multiple times in the past. The hotel owner is also under investigation for possibly being complicit in these illegal acts.

During the raid, police recovered abortion-related medication from the hotel room, further solidifying the case against the suspects. The arrested nurse is currently employed at a local hospital, which raises questions about how she was able to continue her illegal practices undetected for so long.

The implications of this case are significant, as it reflects broader issues of gender discrimination and the need for stricter regulations around medical practices in India. Authorities are now conducting a thorough investigation to uncover the full extent of the racket and determine how many women may have been affected by these illegal abortions.

As the investigation continues, community leaders are calling for more awareness and education regarding women’s rights and health. This case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges many women face in accessing safe and regulated medical services. The police have promised to take strong action against those involved in this racket and to ensure that such illegal activities do not continue in the future.
