In a proud moment for India, the country has won the bid to host the prestigious World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) in 2029. This event will take place in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar, showcasing India’s growing status in global sports. Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his happiness over this achievement, calling it a moment of pride for every Indian.
The announcement came after a comprehensive presentation by Indian representatives at the WPFG Federation meeting in Birmingham, USA. Shah noted that hosting the Games reflects the global recognition of India’s sports infrastructure, developed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
The WPFG is one of the largest multi-sport events in the world, bringing together police officers, firefighters, and first responders from over 70 countries. It features more than 50 sports, with participants competing in various disciplines. The event aims to foster international relationships among law enforcement and fire service personnel.
Since its inception in 1985, the World Police and Fire Games have been held every two years. India first participated in these games in 2007 and has since won over 1,400 medals across eight editions. In the last edition, held in Winnipeg, Canada, Indian police athletes achieved a remarkable record, winning 343 medals, including 224 gold medals.
The bid for the 2029 Games was supported by the Gujarat government, which has been enhancing its sports infrastructure. Gujarat has successfully hosted various national sporting events, including the 36th National Games in 2022. The state aims to establish itself as a multi-sport high-performance venue, which will be further strengthened by hosting the WPFG.
Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel celebrated this victory, stating that it reflects the state’s ambition to be India’s sports capital. He highlighted the importance of this global win as it showcases the success of India’s bid process, which included a rigorous 15-month technical and administrative preparation.
As Gujarat prepares to host the WPFG, it will welcome over 10,000 athletes from around the world. This event promises to be a landmark occasion, not only promoting sports but also boosting local tourism and job creation in the region. The successful hosting of the Games will further enhance Gujarat’s reputation as a key destination for international sporting events.
This historic opportunity is seen as a testament to India’s commitment to promoting sports and building international partnerships through athletics. The WPFG will not only highlight the state’s capabilities but also strengthen the bonds between law enforcement agencies worldwide, creating a platform for collaboration and friendship.
In summary, the World Police and Fire Games 2029 will be a significant event for India and Gujarat, marking a new chapter in the nation’s sporting journey. With the preparation well underway, the state is eager to host this grand event, welcoming participants and spectators from around the globe and showcasing its cultural and sporting spirit.
