Indian Railways has announced a fare increase for long-distance travel, effective July 1, 2025. This change will only affect certain passengers, mainly those travelling over 500 km. However, fares for short-distance and suburban routes remain unchanged.
Passengers using ordinary second class will not see any increase for trips up to 500 km. For those travelling longer distances, a small increase of half a paise per km will apply. For example, a journey of 1,000 km will now cost Rs 2.50 more.
Non-AC Mail and Express train fares will also rise. Passengers can expect a hike of 1 paise per km. Thus, a 1,000 km journey will see an increase of Rs 10.
The fares for all AC coaches will increase by 2 paise per km. For instance, if you are travelling 1,000 km in an AC class, you will pay Rs 20 more.
Suburban train fares and monthly season ticket prices will remain the same, providing relief for daily commuters. The hike is aimed at addressing rising operational costs while trying to avoid burdening regular travellers.
The new fares will be applicable for tickets booked for travel on or after July 1, 2025. Travellers should check the revised fares while booking their tickets to avoid surprises.
Indian Railways has not revised its fares in a while, making this adjustment significant for frequent travellers. The updated fare structure intends to balance the need for revenue against the requirements of passengers.
Passengers are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and stay informed about the new fare structure. This price change is part of Indian Railways’ efforts to maintain services while addressing financial challenges.
