Dr. Vijay Bhatkar, known as the father of India’s supercomputer, recently shared his vision for the future of computer hardware in India. He believes that India is on the verge of becoming a global hub for computer hardware manufacturing. This significant shift will soon allow the export of computer hardware from India to countries around the world.
Bhatkar visited his alma mater, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, where he reminisced about his student days. He emphasized the importance of India’s contributions to the computer software field. Today, he serves as the Chancellor of Nalanda University.
During his visit, he highlighted the growing establishment of computer chip manufacturing plants across India, including Gujarat. This development suggests that India is transitioning beyond just software production into hardware exports as well. In the past, only a few companies like BHEL and Central Electronics Limited were involved in this sector. Now, private companies are stepping in to set up computer chip plants.
Bhatkar mentioned the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and new-age computing in India. He expressed that India has a long journey ahead in software development, which is crucial as even wealthy nations like the USA rely on software created by Indian engineers. Engineers from Gujarat, along with those from South India, are playing a significant role in this growth.
He pointed out the increasing contributions of India and its engineers in emerging fields like indigenous artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Indian software engineers are continuously working on new research and innovations. He reminisced about his studies at Maharaja Sayajirao University, where only analog computers were available during his time. Today, advancements in technology have led to a digital revolution, with software technology driving significant changes.
During a program organized by the Department of Textile at the university, Dr. Bhatkar engaged in discussions with engineering students, inspiring them with his vision for the future of technology in India. He encouraged students to pursue innovation and contribute to the technological advancements of the country.
The future looks bright for India as Dr. Bhatkar predicts that computer hardware exports will soon become a reality. This shift will not only enhance India’s position in the global tech market but also provide new opportunities for engineers and innovators across the nation. With the right support and investments, India can become a leader in both software and hardware development, showcasing the talent and potential of its engineers to the world.
