Bavla, a town in Gujarat, has faced significant challenges following heavy rainfall and flooding. The local government is taking action to address the issues caused by stagnant water and waste accumulation. A joint cleaning campaign has been launched by the Bavla Municipality and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to tackle these problems.
The recent downpour led to an influx of water from upstream, resulting in increased waste and dirt in the area. To combat this, the regional commissioner, Mr. Prashant Jilovani, has initiated additional support from the AMC. Over the past two days, around 70 cleaning workers, four dumpers, and two JCB machines have been deployed to assist the Bavla Municipality’s team.
As part of this combined effort, waste from societies, main roads, and flood-affected areas has been removed in a swift manner. Normally, about seven tons of waste is collected daily, but in this campaign, teams have managed to clear between 25 to 30 tons of waste in just one day. In addition, approximately 700 kilograms of disinfectant have been sprayed to prevent the spread of diseases.
For health safety, the municipality, in collaboration with health authorities, has also started a campaign to provide super chlorinated water. Samples of drinking water are being regularly tested to ensure safety for the public.
To ensure effective management and oversight of the operation, the state government has appointed two chief officers and two engineers at the Bavla Municipality. Additionally, four supervisors and two sanitary inspectors from the AMC are overseeing the cleaning efforts.
Despite these efforts, some areas of the city, such as Baliyadev, Ratndip, Swagat Society, and Ward numbers 6 and 7, are still facing water logging. Continuous dewatering operations are ongoing, with 13 dewatering pumps being utilized by the AMC, GUDC, GIDC, and the municipality to drain the water. Families that have been displaced are being provided shelter and food at Atal Hall.
In response to the persistent water logging issue, the state government has set up a committee to find a permanent solution. This committee has already begun its survey work, and its report will be presented to the government promptly. The municipal authorities have urged citizens to help maintain cleanliness and cooperate with the cleaning efforts.
The floods in Bavla have highlighted the importance of timely intervention and effective waste management. The collaborative efforts between local government bodies and the community are crucial in overcoming the challenges posed by such natural disasters. With continued support and diligence, Bavla can work towards restoring normalcy and ensuring a cleaner, safer environment for its residents.
