The Gujarat government has taken swift action following a ₹71 crore scam linked to the MNREGA scheme in Dahod. Ten investigation teams have been formed to assess 2,282 works carried out under this rural employment programme. The teams will inspect various projects in over 100 villages across Devgadh Baria and Dhanpur talukas.
The state government deployed 30 officers from 12 districts to aid in this investigation. These officers include local employees such as talatis, technical assistants, and Gram Rozgar Sevaks (GRS). In total, 282 local workers will assist the external investigation teams in their efforts.
The investigation follows multiple complaints regarding irregularities in the MNREGA scheme, particularly in Dahod. Three specific cases were filed, revealing discrepancies in works such as water wells and road construction. The cases highlighted issues in Dhanpur’s Simamoi and Baria’s Kuware Radhana, where funds were misused.
Authorities have already arrested 16 individuals, including 12 government employees and owners of four agencies involved in the scam. An ongoing investigation is looking into 31 agencies connected to these fraudulent activities.
The Gujarat government has mandated external teams to conduct thorough audits of the projects. These ten teams, composed of three members each, will work closely with local employees to ensure a comprehensive review of the projects.
The projects under scrutiny include various infrastructure works such as CC roads, stone walls, and playground protection walls. The investigation aims to cover both completed and ongoing projects, ensuring all irregularities are identified and addressed.
Local officials, including the District Development Officer of Dahod, have been involved in coordinating the investigation efforts. They are tasked with ensuring that the teams have the necessary resources and support to carry out their work effectively.
