Issues Arise from Failed Diversion in Gujarat’s Bharg River

In the Chhotaudepur district of Gujarat, a significant problem has emerged regarding the Bharg River diversion at Pavijetpur. This diversion, funded by taxpayer money, has faced severe criticism for failing to serve its intended purpose. The project was initially built at a cost of ₹2.39 crores and was later upgraded to an all-weather structure at double the cost. Despite the efforts, the diversion has washed away during the first heavy rains, raising questions about possible corruption among local officials.

Local residents have been severely affected by these failures. The washed-away diversion has made it difficult for people to travel between Pavijetpur and Bodeli. The community is now left wondering when a reliable diversion will be constructed.

Recently, a new bridge costing ₹35 crores was announced on the Bharg River. Chhotaudepur MP Jasubhai Rathwa performed a groundbreaking ceremony for the bridge, which is expected to be completed in 18 months. The previous bridge collapsed on July 28, 2023, leading to the construction of the diversion, which also failed during the rains. The recent heavy rainfall and the release of 1,000 cusecs of water from a nearby dam caused the diversion to break down at multiple points.

District Collector Gargi Jain inspected the site and ordered an immediate halt to traffic on the diversion. She stated that further decisions would be made after receiving a structural report. For now, the diversion will remain closed for safety reasons.

The local community is frustrated with the ongoing issues. Many people rely on this route for daily activities and are now facing significant hardships due to the lack of reliable infrastructure. The government has approved funds for the new bridge, but the community is anxious about the future and whether it will resolve their travel difficulties.
