Jagnnath Yatra Preparations Begin in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is buzzing with excitement as the 148th Rathyatra of Lord Jagannath is set to take place on July 27. Today, the traditional Netrotsav ceremony was held for Lord Jagannath, his sister Subhadra, and brother Balram. This ceremony is a significant part of the festivities leading up to the grand event.

During the Netrotsav, the eyes of the deities are covered with cloths called ‘patas.’ This is to ensure their eyes are rested before the busy Rathyatra. The ceremony also included the worship of elephants, known as Gajraja, which are a major attraction during the procession.

The ‘patas’ will be unveiled during the Mangala Aarti on the day of the Rathyatra. It is a tradition to cover the eyes of the deities before their grand return to the temple from their home. The ceremony was attended by various trustees and saints, marking a day filled with devotion.

On the eve of the Rathyatra, Lord Jagannath spends around 15 days at his family home, where he enjoys sweets and special foods. This leads to the need for the Netrotsav, as the deities are believed to need rest and care before the long procession.

Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi was present at the ceremony and welcomed by a large crowd of devotees who came to see Lord Jagannath. The Home Minister also inspected the route of the Rathyatra, ensuring that all necessary arrangements are in place to avoid any issues during the event.

Preparations for the Rathyatra are in full swing. A large number of volunteers are working to prepare Prasad, which will include the traditional black bread and white lentils. This practice has been followed for years, aimed at providing Sattvic food to the devotees. The temple’s priests started this tradition, and it continues to be a highlight of the event.

The black bread, known as Malpua, and white lentils, or Doodhpak, are offered to devotees at the temple. Additionally, the Prasad is also sent home with the devotees, which includes Malpua, Bundi, and Gathiya.

As the Rathyatra approaches, the atmosphere in Ahmedabad is electric. The preparations are especially focused at the Jagannath Temple in Jamalpur. The excitement builds as the final touches to the arrangements are made to ensure a grand celebration.

On the day of the Rathyatra, numerous Akhadas and Bhajan mandalis join the procession alongside the chariot. Elephants, beautifully adorned, add to the grandeur of the event. This year, 17 elephants will participate, and their health is being monitored by the Animal Husbandry Department of Ahmedabad.

On July 27, the Rathyatra will feature 18 elephants, 30 Akhadas, and 18 Bhajan mandalis, with over 1,200 volunteers expected to join the celebrations. The entire city is gearing up for a joyous and spiritual experience as they prepare to welcome their beloved Lord Jagannath back to the temple.
