A shocking robbery took place at Om Jewellers in the Vagra market area of Bharuch on Monday afternoon. An unknown assailant used chilli powder to blind the jeweller before making off with gold jewellery worth an estimated ₹4.5 lakh. The incident occurred around 1:13 PM, during busy trading hours, leaving the local community in fear.
According to reports, the robber entered the store pretending to be a customer. He engaged the jeweller in conversation while secretly preparing his attack. In a sudden move, he threw chilli powder into the jeweller’s eyes. This caused temporary blindness, allowing him to grab several pieces of gold jewellery and flee the scene.
The robbery has raised concerns about safety in the Vagra area, which had not seen such brazen crimes in daylight before. Upon hearing about the incident, the Vagra police quickly rushed to the site to investigate. Officers, including P.I. S.D. Fultriya and others from the Bharuch LCB and Jambusar Division, arrived to gather evidence.
CCTV footage captured the robber’s actions. He wore a blue shirt and a red cap, disguising himself as a customer. After sitting at the jeweller’s counter and looking at the jewellery, he took out the chilli powder from his pocket and attacked. The footage also shows him fleeing towards Patel Khadki area, prompting police to initiate a manhunt.
The community is on high alert, given that this is the first robbery of its kind in the busy market area. Many locals have expressed their worries about their safety, especially during the day when shops are crowded. Police have increased patrols and are reviewing additional CCTV footage from nearby locations, including a mosque where the suspect may have been spotted.
