Ahmedabad is alive with joy as it celebrates the 148th Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath. This sacred event started on June 27, 2025, during the auspicious occasion of Ashadhi Bij. Thousands of devotees gathered to witness this grand procession. Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings, Lord Balram and Devi Subhadra, set out on their ornate chariots. The streets were filled with chants of “Jai Ranchhod, Makhan Chor,” creating a vibrant atmosphere of devotion.
The chariots reached Raipur Chakla, welcomed by light rain, adding to the festive spirit. Preparations for the ‘Mamera’ ceremony in Saraspur were underway as devotees awaited the arrival of Lord Jagannath. The chariot was later welcomed at the AMC office, where flowers were showered upon the deity.
In another part of the city, elephants and trucks made their way to Saraspur. However, some chaos occurred when an elephant lost control in Khadia, injuring a few people. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported. The elephants were swiftly managed by the maharaja and security staff.
Security measures were tight during the Rath Yatra. A no-drone zone was established for safety, but a suspicious drone was shot down by authorities. The event also saw the establishment of a help desk for missing persons, supported by various security agencies.
As the procession continued, a truck got stuck at Jamalpur Gate, causing a brief delay. This year’s Rath Yatra featured over 100 creatively decorated trucks, each with its unique theme, drawing the attention of large crowds.
The community spirit was evident as members from the Muslim community joined in welcoming Lord Jagannath with flowers, showcasing unity among different faiths. Devotees dressed in cultural attire added colour to the celebrations.
The Rath Yatra was filled with traditional bhajans, elephant processions, and martial arts performances by local akhadas. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel performed the ceremonial Pahind Vidhi, officially commencing the Yatra amidst light showers.
For the first time, Lord Jagannath received a Guard of Honour before departing, marking a significant moment in the event’s history. Union Home Minister Amit Shah performed the Mangala Aarti at the temple, leading the day’s spiritual activities.
The chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balram, and Subhadra are set to cover a 16-kilometre route through the historic parts of Ahmedabad, ending back at the temple by evening. The Rath Yatra is not just a religious event; it is a celebration of culture, community, and devotion that unites people from all walks of life.
