In a shocking incident, three men have been arrested for the alleged gang rape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College in Kasba, South Kolkata. The case has drawn widespread attention and condemnation, highlighting concerns over women’s safety in West Bengal. According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the victim, the primary accused, Monojit Mishra, 31, reacted violently after she rejected his marriage proposal. The victim stated that he confined her in a room, made threats against her and her boyfriend, and warned that her parents could be implicated. “I touched his feet, but he didn’t let me go. They forcibly took me to the guard room, undressed me, and raped me,” she recounted in her FIR. The victim further alleged that the accused filmed the assault and threatened to release the video if she did not comply with their demands. When she attempted to escape, she was beaten with a hockey stick, leaving her injured. The incident reportedly took place between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM on Wednesday. Police arrested two of the accused, Monojit Mishra and Ahmed, near a traffic signal in Kasba on Thursday evening. The third accused, Mukherjee, was taken into custody from his home early Friday. Authorities have seized their mobile phones for forensic analysis. The BJP’s IT Cell Chief, Amit Malviya, condemned the incident, accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of failing to maintain law and order. He claimed that West Bengal has become a nightmare for women under TMC rule. Malviya stated, “Rape has become a routine tragedy.” He also alleged that the college authorities were instructed to lock the gates during the crime, calling it a cover-up of the highest order. The victim, a first-year law student, had gone to the campus for some work. She stated that everything seemed normal until one of the accused asked her to stay longer. After rejecting Mishra’s marriage proposal, she was trapped and assaulted. The medical examination confirmed her claims of rape, revealing evidence of forceful penetration and injuries consistent with sexual assault. The FIR details how the accused threatened her to ensure her silence, even using videos of the assault for blackmail. In her complaint, the survivor described the ordeal: “He tried to force me. I cried and asked him to let me go. But he didn’t listen.” She alleged that the main accused instructed the others to lock the door and that she was repeatedly threatened and assaulted. As the investigation continues, the case is sparking outrage and debate about safety for women in educational institutions. Activists and political figures are calling for justice and demanding accountability from the authorities. The TMC has distanced itself from the accused, condemning the assault while facing criticism for the state of women’s safety. The survivor has expressed her determination to seek justice, stating, “I need justice.” The incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by women in many parts of India, where issues of safety and harassment remain prevalent.
