A young woman studying at a college in Kolkata has come forward with a shocking complaint. She claims that two senior students and a former student sexually assaulted her on campus. The incident allegedly occurred on the evening of June 25. The woman had gone to the college for academic work.
In her statement to the police, she explained that the three accused took her to a room and raped her. After the incident, she reported it to the Kasba Police Station. Consequently, all three suspects were arrested on Thursday night.
The woman visited South Calcutta Law College around noon on June 25 to complete some exam-related formalities. After waiting in the college union room, she alleges one of the accused instructed that the college’s main gate be locked. She was then taken to the security guard’s room, where the assault occurred between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM.
The arrested individuals have been identified as:
– **Monojit Mishra (31)**: A former student associated with the student wing of the Trinamool Congress (TMCP).
– **Zaib Ahmed (19)**: A first-year student at the college.
– **Pramit Mukherjee (20)**: Another current student.
Mishra and Ahmed were arrested from a road crossing in Kasba, while Mukherjee was taken into custody later that night from his home. Police have also seized their mobile phones as part of the investigation.
Doctors are currently examining the survivor, and the police are treating the case as a top priority. They have promised to gather more evidence as the investigation continues.
This incident raises serious concerns about campus safety. It is a stark reminder of the need for strict enforcement of law and order in educational institutions. Sadly, this is not the first time such a crime has occurred in Kolkata. Less than a year ago, a postgraduate medical student at RG Kar Medical College was raped and murdered. That case resulted in the conviction of a 33-year-old civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police.
The recent assault has sparked outrage and renewed calls for justice. The West Bengal unit of the BJP has criticized the ruling TMC government. They claim that crimes against women have become a daily horror in West Bengal. BJP leaders have stated they will not stay silent and will fight against the culture of rape that they believe has flourished under TMC’s rule.
On the other hand, the Trinamool Congress expressed sorrow over the incident. They have blamed the BJP for not implementing the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill, which aims to create a strong deterrent against sexual offences. They stress the importance of speedy investigations and strict punishments for offenders.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken note of the case. They have directed the Commissioner of Police in Kolkata to ensure a prompt investigation and provide the victim with the necessary medical, psychological, and legal support. They have requested a detailed report on the actions taken within three days.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of violence against women in educational institutions. It is crucial for authorities to ensure that campuses are safe and that victims of assault receive the justice and support they deserve.
As the investigation continues, many are hoping for a swift resolution and justice for the victim. The community is also calling for better safety measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
