In Ahmedabad, a significant cleaning campaign took place along the banks of the Sabarmati River. This event was organised by the Gujarat Home Guards and Civil Defence in celebration of World Environment Day. Around 5,900 volunteers joined the effort, including 5,300 Home Guards and 600 Civil Defence workers.
The cleaning campaign focused on two main areas. On the east bank, it stretched from the Atal Bridge to the Sardar Bridge. On the west bank, the cleaning went from the Sardar Bridge near the National Institute of Design (NID) to the Ambedkar Bridge. Volunteers collected between 35 to 40 tons of waste from the riverbanks, leaving the area much cleaner.
During the event, Commandant General Manoj Agrawal addressed the volunteers. He encouraged them to stay aware of cleanliness and their duty towards nature. Together, they took an oath to keep the Sabarmati River clean and honour its historical importance.
The Gujarat Home Guards, known for their motto “Nishkam Seva” or selfless service, have contributed significantly during disasters like floods, earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
This initiative was guided by key figures like IPS Manoj Agrawal and Joint Director of Civil Defence Sripal Shishma. They were joined by district commandants Kumar Patel and Snehal Patel, as well as A.A. Sheikh of Civil Defence, who motivated the participants throughout the day.
The Sabarmati River holds a special place in the heart of Ahmedabad. It has been a vital source of life and culture for the city. The Sabarmati Ashram, located along its banks, is a historic site linked to Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi used this place as a base during India’s struggle for independence.
The cleaning drive not only aimed to beautify the area but also to raise awareness about environmental conservation. Such initiatives are crucial as they foster a sense of community and responsibility towards the environment. Volunteers expressed their commitment to regularly participate in such activities, ensuring the river remains clean for future generations.
