Nadiad is currently undergoing a significant development. The state government is working to widen and deepen the Vaishali drain. However, this project has faced many obstacles. One major issue is the frequent overflow of drain water into the area where construction is taking place. This has been a problem for the past four months, causing delays in the work. The Gujarat Urban Development Company (GUDC) has entrusted the task of improving the Vaishali drain to the Miral Infrastructure Agency from Ahmedabad. They have been working on this project for over four months now.
Since the beginning of the work, the municipal corporation has posed challenges, especially concerning drainage. Drain water from nearby residential areas has been spilling into the construction zone. This situation has made it very difficult for the agency’s workers to carry out their tasks effectively. Despite the project starting after a long delay, the drain water issue has made conditions even more complicated.
Officials from the municipal corporation have been urged repeatedly to find a permanent solution, but so far, no effective changes have been made. The only action taken by the municipal body has been to pump out the water using jetting machines. The agency is striving to complete over 50% of the work before the monsoon. However, the continuous influx of drain water into the Vaishali drain area is hindering progress.
Another contributing factor to the drainage issue is the lack of timely operation of the pumping station located on the road leading to Santaram from Vaishali. This has caused drain water to backflow into the area where construction is ongoing, further complicating the situation. It is evident that immediate action is needed to address both the drainage and construction challenges.
The work on the Vaishali drain aims to widen it to six meters and increase its height to 3.5 meters. Additionally, approach roads of four meters on both sides of the drain will be constructed. This project is expected to improve traffic flow in the area significantly. Previously, large vehicles faced difficulties while passing through, and even small vehicles had to navigate carefully.
The total cost of developing the drain is estimated to be over eight crores. With the expansion, it is hoped that the area will see a reduction in traffic issues. Currently, work is underway to fill boxes around the drain area, preparing for the upcoming monsoon season. The aim is to complete four boxes before the rains come. Most of the foundational work for these boxes is already done, and the project is expected to be completed before the monsoon of 2026.
The municipal corporation has provided temporary solutions by installing pipes to manage the drain water better. However, it is crucial for them to implement a more effective long-term solution to prevent further disruptions in the future. As the project progresses, the community hopes for a successful outcome that will enhance infrastructure and improve living conditions in Nadiad.
