The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, has made a significant decision to provide Narmada water for irrigation and drinking purposes in North Gujarat and Saurashtra until June 30, 2025. This initiative aims to help farmers and ensure adequate water supply during the summer season. More than 950 water bodies in North Gujarat and 243 water bodies in Saurashtra will receive Narmada water. Additionally, around 1,820 check dams will also benefit from this water supply.
The Chief Minister stated that this decision will support over 60,000 acres of agricultural land, allowing farmers to irrigate their crops. He responded positively to the representations made by farmers and leaders from both regions during a recent meeting. The allocation includes 30,689 million cubic feet (MCFT) of water from the Narmada River, with 14,539 MCFT designated for North Gujarat and 16,150 MCFT for Saurashtra.
The Narmada water will be delivered through a pipeline system and the Sujalam Sufalam canal, ensuring that the water reaches the necessary farms and water bodies. The aim is to tackle the water scarcity issue faced by local residents and farmers, particularly during the crucial planting season.
Farmers in North Gujarat and Saurashtra have often faced challenges with water availability, especially in the dry months. The allocation of Narmada water is expected to ease these challenges and boost agricultural productivity in these regions.
