A significant event took place in Anand, Gujarat, where the Anand Agricultural University (AAU) collaborated with the state’s Agriculture, Farmers Welfare, and Co-operation Department to host a dialogue on natural agriculture. This dialogue was attended by various officials and progressive farmers from multiple districts including Ahmedabad, Anand, Kheda, Gandhinagar, and Botad. The Governor of Gujarat, Acharya Devvrat, highlighted the importance of natural farming during this event.
The Governor pointed out that many farmers are hesitant about natural agriculture because they often confuse it with organic farming. He explained that organic farming usually involves the use of fertilizers like urea and DAP. However, natural farming does not use these chemicals, instead focusing on cultivating pure microorganisms. He assured farmers that while organic farming might result in lower yields at a higher cost, natural farming can yield healthier produce without such expenses.
During the dialogue, Governor Devvrat referred to Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, known as the father of the Green Revolution, stating that in the past, he recommended 13 kg of nitrogen for one hectare. Today, however, farmers are applying much more, which is degrading soil quality. He emphasized that the only solution to restore soil fertility is through natural agriculture, which increases organic carbon levels in the soil.
Research conducted over three years at the Anand Agricultural University confirmed that adopting natural farming practices can yield results comparable to chemical farming from the very first year. The Governor encouraged everyone involved in the natural agriculture mission to see their work as a divine duty that protects not only human health but also the environment, water resources, and livestock.
He stated, “This initiative is not just the responsibility of one person but a national mission. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made natural farming a national mission, and it is now our duty to train others in different states. We must strengthen ourselves to fulfill this responsibility.”
The event also featured presentations from officials and university leaders. Dr. K.B. Kathiriya, the Vice-Chancellor of AAU, assured that the university would soon provide research-based solutions to protect crops without harming beneficial insects. The Director of Agriculture, P.S. Rabari, explained the purpose of the dialogue, while the Joint Director of Agriculture for the Ahmedabad zone, N.M. Shukla, expressed gratitude to all attendees.
In attendance were various officials, including the District Collector, Praveen Chaudhari, and other key figures from the agriculture and horticulture departments. The dialogue aimed to promote awareness and practical understanding of natural agriculture, encouraging participants to implement these practices in their farming activities. Overall, the event marked a significant step towards promoting sustainable farming practices in Gujarat, which is crucial for the well-being of farmers and the environment alike.
