Obesity is becoming a serious issue in India, affecting many people’s health. It can lead to various diseases, making the body vulnerable to health problems. To address this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a nationwide initiative called ‘Obesity Free India’. This campaign is essential in today’s world. Understanding its importance, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has started the ‘Healthy Gujarat – Obesity Free Gujarat’ movement in the state.
In line with this campaign, Gandhinagar Civil Hospital opened the state’s first obesity clinic in the first week of May. Located in Ward No. 14, this clinic has appointed expert doctors and nursing staff to help patients. Since its opening, the clinic has provided counselling to over 569 patients regarding weight management and obesity.
At the clinic, patients undergo screening to measure their weight and height, which helps calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI). Patients with a BMI under 25 are considered healthy. Those with a BMI between 25 and 30 are overweight, while a BMI between 30 and 35 indicates obesity. A BMI over 35 is classified as severe obesity.
Patients with a BMI over 25 receive consultations from counsellors who review their medical history and provide necessary guidance. Nutritionists offer advice on balanced and nutritious diets. Medical officers examine patients and, based on their medical history and reports, may refer them to physicians, pediatricians, general surgeons, psychiatrists, or gynecologists for further support.
Obesity plays a significant role in conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Therefore, the obesity clinic treats patients suffering from these ailments. Expert doctors and nursing staff check the patients’ weight, height, and BMI, which helps in creating tailored lifestyle changes and diet plans. Additionally, counsellors guide patients regarding their health issues.
To empower the youth, the state government has launched the Healthy Gujarat campaign. Increasing cases of heart attacks among young people have been linked to obesity. As a result, various hospitals in the state are now opening obesity clinics. Patients are encouraged to maintain regular exercise, practice yoga, and manage stress through physical activity.
Let’s come together to create a new approach to combat obesity. It is not just about medication; it requires determination, discipline, and healthy habits. Together, we can take a step towards a healthier life.
