The government of Gujarat has announced a significant change in the district structure of the state. Starting from January 1, 2025, Banaskantha district will be divided into two districts: Banaskantha and a new district called Vav-Tharad. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The new headquarters for Vav-Tharad will be established in the town of Tharad.
Banaskantha district, located in the northern part of Gujarat, has been known for its vast area and numerous administrative challenges. Currently, it has 14 talukas, making it the district with the highest number of talukas in the state. The division aims to ease the administrative burden and improve the delivery of government services to the people.
The newly formed Vav-Tharad district will include eight talukas: Vav, Bhabhar, Tharad, Dhanera, Suigam, Lakhni, Diyodar, and Kankrej. This change will help reduce the distance that residents need to travel for government services. For instance, the average distance to the district headquarters will decrease by 35 to 85 kilometres.
Local residents have long requested this change, citing the need for better governance and resource allocation. The Chief Minister highlighted that this division is a response to the longstanding demands of the public. The new structure will provide more focused attention on local issues and facilitate development.
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions. While many residents support the creation of the new district, there are some who oppose it. Some villagers from Dhanera have expressed their desire for Dhanera to remain part of Banaskantha district. They argue that the division might lead to a loss of resources and support.
Protests have taken place in the region, with some groups demanding that Dhanera should stay within Banaskantha. However, supporters of the new Vav-Tharad district argue that it will lead to better administrative efficiency and economic growth.
The government has assured that this division will not disrupt local elections. However, local body elections in the new district will be postponed until all administrative processes are completed, which may take up to nine months.
Banaskantha district is famous for its rich culture and natural beauty, with several tourist attractions such as the Ambaji temple and the Rann of Kutch. The district’s economy is primarily based on agriculture and trade. The creation of the new district is expected to boost local economies by enhancing infrastructure and creating new job opportunities.
