New Drainage Lines to Benefit 2.3 Million in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is set to improve its drainage system with the construction of the Western and Eastern Trunk Lines. This project aims to tackle the persistent drainage issues in several areas, especially during the monsoon season. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is leading this initiative to ensure that rainwater is managed effectively and does not lead to flooding.

The Eastern Trunk Line is expected to be completed by June this year, while the Western Trunk Line may take a bit longer. These new lines will provide long-awaited relief to residents in regions from Vaishnodevi Circle to Fatehwadi Canal and Naroda to Hathi Jan. Approximately 2.3 million residents will benefit from this improved drainage infrastructure, which is essential for handling heavy rainfall.

The Western Trunk Line will stretch over 28.5 km and is estimated to cost around ₹296.34 crores. Currently, 25.82 km of this line has been completed. The remaining 1.9 km is expected to be finished by July 2025. Once completed, this line will address drainage overflow issues in areas like Gota, Science City, Chandlodiya, and South Bopal, among others. An estimated 1.82 million residents will gain from this upgraded system.

On June 11, 2025, the ongoing work at Fatehwadi Canal faced delays due to flooding caused by water accumulation. This has affected the timeline for completing the Western Trunk Line, as the work needs to be adjusted accordingly.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Trunk Line, which spans 11.33 km, is under construction at an estimated cost of ₹112.38 crores. So far, about 10.81 km has been completed, with the remaining 0.5 km expected to be finished by June 2025. Once this line is operational, it will support the Odhav 310 pumping station, significantly improving drainage management in regions like Naroda, Hanspura, and Ramol Hathi Jan. About 500,000 residents will benefit from these improvements.

In summary, the AMC’s efforts to install these Trunk Lines will provide a long-term solution to the city’s drainage problems. The investment of over ₹400 crores in these projects highlights the commitment to enhancing the living conditions of Ahmedabad’s residents. As the city prepares for the upcoming monsoon season, these developments promise to bring much-needed relief and efficiency to the drainage system, ensuring that rainfall does not disrupt daily life for millions of citizens.
