The Gujarat Education Department has issued a new circular regarding the School Leaving Certificate (LC) for students in all government primary and secondary schools. Starting from June 2025, students will now have their surname mentioned on the LC. This change aims to improve the accuracy of student records and reduce issues faced during admissions and scholarships.
Currently, when students transfer schools, they receive a School Leaving Certificate which includes important details such as their name, father’s name, mother’s name, and date of birth. However, there have been inconsistencies in how students’ names are recorded, leading to complications in their educational processes.
The department is working on mapping students’ names with their Aadhaar cards under the APAAR ID initiative. The new guidelines will ensure that students’ full names, including surnames, are accurately written on the certificates. This change is crucial as it aligns with the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Act of 1972, which mandates the regularisation of name entries on LCs for all schools.
The circular emphasises that schools must maintain consistency in naming conventions. This will help avoid further discrepancies that have previously caused difficulties for students when applying for further education or receiving financial aid.
The Education Board is committed to enhancing the quality of education in the state. By implementing these new guidelines, they hope to streamline the process of issuing LCs and improve the overall educational experience for students. The changes are expected to be fully in place by the start of the next academic session.
In recent years, the department has made continuous efforts to improve the educational infrastructure and processes in Gujarat. These new requirements for LCs are just one of the many steps being taken to ensure that students have a smoother transition during their school years.
As the education sector evolves, it is essential for policies to adapt to the needs of students and their families. The Gujarat Education Department’s initiative is a positive development aimed at creating a more efficient and user-friendly educational system, which prioritises the needs of students and their records. This move has been welcomed by many educators and parents who see the potential benefits for future generations of students in Gujarat.
