Nineteen young men and women from Porbandar travelled to Thailand for house-keeping jobs but were cheated out of their money. The group had paid between 300,000 to 400,000 rupees each to the scammers. They were brought to Thailand by a man from Cyprus and a Punjabi man who promised them good employment. Instead, they ended up in a difficult situation without any support.
After two months of waiting for jobs that never came, the youth used social media to appeal for help. Their videos went viral, reaching the Indian community in Thailand, who stepped in to assist them. The Mahipat Singh Chauhan Foundation organised their flights back to India. On Sunday, they returned to Ahmedabad and then to Porbandar.
Their families had been worried about their safety and were relieved to see them return. The youth plan to file a formal complaint against the scammers once they settle down.
