In the Naswadi area of Gujarat, old trees along the roads are causing serious safety issues. The trees, mostly Acacia, have been leaning dangerously and can fall during storms. This often leads to road blockages and can put lives at risk. Two main roads, the Naswadi-Tankhala road and the Palasr-Kandha road, are affected. These roads connect over 100 villages and are vital for local transport.
The Naswadi-Tankhala road is about 12 kilometers long, while the Palasr-Kandha road stretches 15 kilometers. Both roads are owned by the State Roads and Buildings (R&B) department, with an office located in Chhotaudepur. However, there are no officials from the R&B department residing in Naswadi, making it difficult to address the tree hazard.
Many of these trees are 30 to 40 years old. Their roots have decayed over time, making them unstable. During the rainy season, water collects around the roots, causing soil erosion. When strong winds hit, these trees can fall onto the roads, disrupting traffic. Recently, more than three trees have fallen in just two days, further highlighting the danger.
Local residents are worried. Mitesh Desai, a local from Naswadi, expressed his concern about the frequent tree falls. He mentioned that the roads are critical for people travelling between villages. When a tree falls, it can take hours to clear the road, leaving drivers stranded and frustrated.
The district collector has instructed the relevant officials to take action before the monsoon season. It is essential for the forest department and the State R&B officials to survey the area and remove any dangerous trees. The safety of drivers and pedestrians is at risk; a falling tree could cause serious injuries or even fatalities.
As the monsoon approaches, the urgency to address this issue increases. With over 100 villages relying on these roads, it is crucial to ensure that the routes remain safe for travel. Residents hope that the officials will take immediate action to prevent accidents and ensure safe passage for all.
