A senior female officer from ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) has fallen victim to a massive cyber fraud, losing ₹1.36 crore. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of financial transactions in the digital age.
The officer, Triveniben Patel, works in the Chandkheda area of Ahmedabad. On May 31, she received a phone call from an unknown number. The caller claimed to be from the Telecom Regulatory Authority and warned her that her phone would be shut down in two hours. Shortly after, another caller, impersonating a CBI officer, informed her that there were ₹2 crore of black money linked to her Canara Bank account.
In a panic, Triveniben was told that a digital arrest warrant was issued against her. The caller sent a WhatsApp message containing a letter supposedly from the Supreme Court, further convincing her of the seriousness of the situation. The impersonator then pressured her to transfer money to avoid legal trouble.
During the call, the impersonator showed her a video from the court room and demanded her Aadhaar card for verification. Believing she was in serious trouble, Triveniben transferred ₹36 lakh to another bank account as instructed by the fraudsters.
Additionally, funds were transferred from her mother’s bank account and fixed deposits, bringing the total loss to ₹1.36 crore. The fraudsters continued their scheme by demanding more money under various pretexts, including threats of selling her property to cover the supposed fines.
After realising she had been conned, Triveniben sought help from her relatives. This incident highlights the increasing number of scams targeting individuals, especially professionals who may be unaware of such fraudulent tactics.
The Cyber Crime Department has begun an investigation into the case. Officials are urging citizens to remain vigilant and not to respond to unsolicited calls, especially those requesting personal or financial information. It is essential to verify the identity of callers, especially when they claim to be from government agencies.
