Opposition Corporators Protest at Palanpur Municipality

In Palanpur, a protest was held by opposition corporators against the municipality’s failure to address pressing issues in wards 4 and 5. Local residents have been struggling with problems such as street lights not functioning, water leaks, and potholes on the roads. These issues have turned Palanpur, once a thriving city, into one riddled with potholes. Abrar Sheikh, the corporator for ward 4, stated that they will continue the protest indefinitely until their concerns are resolved. Alongside Sheikh, other Congress corporators like Ankita Thakor and Aashaben Rawal joined the sit-in at the municipality office.

Palanpur, located in the Banaskantha district of Gujarat, has a rich historical and cultural heritage. It’s known as the ‘City of Scents’ and has been recognized for its beautiful gardens and historical significance. The city was founded by the ruler Prahlad Dev Parmar, who was a notable playwright and poet. The area has ties to several historical figures, including Siddhraj Jaysinh, a famous ruler from the Solanki dynasty, who was born in Palanpur.

The municipality’s inability to resolve these issues has left many residents frustrated. Over the years, Palanpur has changed from a prosperous city to one facing significant infrastructure challenges. Many locals have expressed their dissatisfaction with the municipal administration. Sheikh emphasized that the protest will persist until the municipality takes action to improve the situation.

In recent years, Palanpur has been approved for a development plan after a long wait of over 21 years. The government finally sanctioned the development map, which is expected to boost the city’s growth. The TP committee chairman, Kavita Ben Prajapati, expressed hope for the city’s development, thanking the BJP government and local leaders for their support.

The newly approved development plan considers the city’s geographical conditions, direction for growth, and local needs. The municipality has also called for objections and suggestions from the public to finalize the map.

Palanpur is well-connected to other cities through roads and railways. It is the main hub of the Banaskantha district and has several educational institutions and healthcare facilities. The city’s economy relies heavily on industry, agriculture, and local trade.

Tourism is also on the rise, with various historical and religious sites attracting visitors. The Balram Palace, famous for its scenic beauty, and other temples like Gangeshwar Mahadev and Pataleshwar Mahadev are popular among tourists. The city is also known for its attar industry, which has earned it the title of ‘City of Scents’.

Despite these challenges, the residents of Palanpur remain hopeful that their city will see significant improvements in the near future. The ongoing protests highlight the community’s demand for better infrastructure and services, reflecting their commitment to making Palanpur a better place for all.
