Orange Alert for Heavy Rainfall in 14 Gujarat Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for July 2 and 3 across 14 districts in Gujarat. This alert warns residents of heavy to very heavy rainfall expected during these days.

On July 2, significant rainfall is anticipated in multiple districts, including Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Gandhinagar, Dahod, Mahisagar, Dang, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. The IMD states that these areas may experience severe weather conditions.

In the past 24 hours, heavy rains have already affected parts of south Gujarat. Districts like Tapi, Valsad, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli saw substantial rainfall. Kaprada taluka in Valsad recorded the highest rainfall of 4 inches, while Dolwan in Tapi received 2.5 inches and Subir in Dang had 2 inches.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), rainfall was logged in 89 talukas across 32 districts recently. This shows that the monsoon has been active, with a total of 288.70 mm of rainfall recorded so far, which is about 32.73% of the annual average for this time of year. This amount of rain is the highest recorded since 2015. The southwest monsoon started covering Gujarat on June 16 and reached all parts by June 18.

In response to the heavy rains, a high-level meeting was convened by the Weather Watch Group at SEOC. All departments have been advised to remain on high alert and to coordinate their responses.

To assist with any emergencies, 32 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed throughout the state. Additionally, two more teams are on standby to help if needed.

Reservoirs across the state are also being monitored closely. Currently, 21 reservoirs are on high alert due to rising water levels, with 12 at alert level and 19 under warning status.

Residents are urged to pay attention to local advisories and to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall periods. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.

Overall, citizens in the affected districts should prepare for the forecasted heavy rains and stay safe during this weather event. It is crucial to take precautions to avoid any potential hazards associated with severe rainfall, such as flooding, landslides, or structural damage from strong winds.

As the monsoon season progresses, it is essential for people to stay informed and heed the warnings issued by the IMD and local authorities. By doing so, they can help ensure their safety and well-being during these challenging weather conditions.
