In Junagadh, Gujarat, the local administration has issued an urgent advisory due to adverse weather conditions in the Arabian Sea. The weather department has warned of heavy rainfall and rough seas for the next 72 hours. As a precaution, all fishing boats that had ventured into the sea were called back to Mangrol Port. By evening, around 2,000 boats had returned safely.
The decision to call back the fishing boats was made by the Junagadh District Collector during a meeting with various department officials. This was in response to forecasts of a developing weather system that could potentially cause strong winds and heavy rainfall. Fishermen leaders noted that most boats had not been fishing since March due to a downturn in the fishing industry. Only a few boats had gone out to sea, and they too were instructed to return immediately.
Upon arrival at Mangrol Port, efforts began promptly to safely remove the boats from the water. Fishermen reported that measures were taken to prevent any damage to the vessels. The port has been busy with the influx of boats as fishermen work to secure their equipment from the worsening weather.
The situation has been exacerbated by a low-pressure system forming in the Arabian Sea, which is expected to intensify into a depression in the coming hours. As a result, a signal indicating dangerous sea conditions was raised at Jafrabad Port, where currents have already been observed.
Heavy rainfall has been reported across Saurashtra and South Gujarat, leading to localized flooding and damage. In Amreli, rivers overflowed due to the sudden downpour, causing disruptions in the area. Additionally, several electric poles have fallen, and roofs of houses in Valsad have been damaged by strong winds.
The local fishing community has been advised to refrain from going out to sea until further notice. With the unpredictable nature of the weather, it is crucial for the safety of the fishermen and their boats. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond to any emergency that may arise due to the severe weather conditions.
